Faith in action…Caring for our community

Dear Neighbor,

"In as much as ye have done it to one of the least of my brothers, you have done it to me." (Matthew 25:40)

This Bible scripture expresses the mission goals of all the volunteers who have come to our area to assist us in our hurricane recovery efforts.

Christian volunteers from many faith-based churches, organizations, civic groups, and educational facilities from across the nation as well as Canada have responded to our call for assistance in our efforts to get our hurricane victims back in their damaged homes.  Without these volunteer groups providing free labor to help reconstruct the many damaged homes in Jefferson County, we, as a disaster recovery organization, would not be able to function at such a high level.

Volunteers are the backbone of any recovery effort, and we have been fortunate enough to have some of the best in the nation donate their time and talents to our recovery efforts.  From the ones who pick up trash to the ones who rebuild homes, we offer our sincere thanks and gratitude.  We pray that God will bless them as much as they have blessed us with their recovery efforts.

Southeast Texas Interfaith Organization for Disaster Recovery (SETIO) recently celebrated the completion of the Hurricane Rita-Port Arthur Recovery Project, and we are proud of the 1,235 homes that we were able to rehab during this project.

As of July 15, 2009, SETIO has had over 3,252 volunteers come to our aid for disaster recovery work due to both hurricanes Rita and Ike.  These volunteers have contributed over 148,000 man hours that equal to approximately $2,790,000 of "free" labor.

Currently we are totally committed to the victims of Hurricane Ike; however, without the aid of federal funding, we are totally dependent on grants as well as private and corporate donations.  We have our 501(c)3 status and are able to receive gifts of appreciated stock, cash and/or checks that are tax deductible.

On behalf of those without the means to recover on their own, we appeal to your wise stewardship of God's blessings to you.

On behalf of the entire SETIO Executive Committee and Staff, we appeal to your generosity.

Sincerely,

Anne Hedleston, Chairman

Southeast Texas Interfaith Organization for Disaster Recovery (SETIO)
